Brief History of Magento
Magento was co-founded by Roy Rubin and Yoav Kutner. The development of Magento officially started in early 2007. In the same year, on 31st August, it released the first public beta version of the platform. On March 31, 2008, the platform was finally launched, but under the name “Bento.” During this initial phase, Magento received numerous awards and accolades, including the “Best of Open Source Software Awards.”
Magento achieved several other milestones after that. On June 24, 2008, Magento released its community edition. Its enterprise edition was released the next year. Magento mobile was launched in the subsequent year (2010). The founding company, Varien Inc., renamed the platform to Magento in the same year.
In 2011, the American e-commerce company eBay announced an investment in Magento, worth 49% of the company’s ownership share. Eventually, this led to the complete acquisition of the company on June 6, 2011. In the same year, Magento Developer Certifications were introduced. In 2012, the platform created a new record of 4 million downloads.
In 2015, Magento Commerce launched itself as an independent company with the support of Permira Funds. Magento 2 was released in the same year. In 2016, several notable things happened, including the release of the Magento Luma theme, the launch of the Magento marketplace and Magento Enterprise Cloud edition, and the partnership with Adobe. In August 2018, Adobe acquired Magento.
